Are New York streets paved with gold?

A New Yorker claims to have found "bits of diamonds, rubies, platinum and gold" on the sidewalks of Midtown Manhattan.

  1. I have just read the book "NEW YORK" writen by Richard Rutherfurd. The history of the Big apple since indians times. If there is a thing that emerges from the reading is the fact that in New York there must have been wealthy people galore walking down the streets during three hundreds years. Some of them are supposed to be neglected with their jewels but what shocks me most is The New York City Cleaning Service Staff. What have they been doing for ages?. I figure them wiping smoothly the street surface and getting glitter. Oblivious as they have been, I am afraid that a new kind of Gold Fever starts in New York Streets from now on.
